Sufjan Stevens is hands down one of the most creative musicians in the business right now. 'Should Have Known Better' is my favourite song off his album Carrie and Lowell, which is named after Sufjan's mother and stepfather. His mother, Carrie suffered from depression, schizophrenia, and substance abuse, and abandoned Sufjan when he was a year old. Sufjan wrote the album to cope with her death and to process his childhood. The album traces the broad spectrum of emotions that come with grief, and confronting the ugliness and beauty of life.
